There are several ways students can earn extra art classes, and one way is with a GOTCHA. Students receive a GOTCHA if they demonstrate exceptional teamwork, effort, respect, or responsibility. At the end of each month, a drawing is held to select a GOTCHA recipient for a special reward. Students whose names are drawn can choose from a variety of things, including extra art, music, or PE! GOTCHAs can also be given to an entire class. I love when students choose extra art because we get a chance to do special projects.
Last year, half of Mrs. Pittore’s second graders chose extra art and half chose extra recess. The students who came to art made ceramic plaques. We used rolling pins to roll out slabs of clay, and cut out large ovals to form the base of our plaques. We then cut letters and shapes from the clay. Students used the score and slip technique to securely attach their designs to their bases. Many students made a sign with their name or their initials, and one made a pizza with toppings! Students who finished early chose to work together to make one plaque for Mrs. Pittore’s room and one for the art room — I couldn’t have been happier! They thought hard about what Mrs. Pittore and I would like on our plaques, and worked together to create them for us.
